Ianto heaved a sigh, summing up their collective evening. ‘Naughty or nice, I think I’m ready for bed now,’ he conceded. ‘If we sleep through the entirety of Christmas, I won’t be upset at this point. Just so long as I still have all my fingers and toes at the end of it.’

Jack could still hear the rain pattering outside and tapping against the tin roof, but it sounded as if even it had tempered its efforts. They only had to make it until morning, which at this point, was only a few more hours. Provided it didn’t get any colder and start snowing, they’d be out of here at first light. They might both be feeling sorry for themselves, but at least they were no longer arguing. ‘Bed sounds like a great idea,’ Jack replied.

Ianto cupped his candle holder between gloved hands and began up the basement steps. Jack let him go ahead this time, because he had the only light, and so that if he tripped on anything on the way back up, he'd fall backward and it would be Jack who would break his fall, instead of the other way around.

Once out of the basement, Ianto navigated his way back towards the bedroom. Had Jack not been watching what he was doing, and simply feeling ten kinds of miserable, he would have bungled right into the back of Ianto as he came to a sudden halt. ‘What are you stopping for?’

‘It's warm,’ came the reply, puzzlement in the tone in which it was delivered.

Jack snorted. ‘You're kidding right? You said it yourself, it's freezing in here.’

‘Well, this spot just here isn’t,’ Ianto said, pointing downwards. ‘I think it's radiating up from the floor.’

Jack gave him a concerned look. ‘Are you sure you're not just feeling feverish? I know you've been trying to hide how much this cold is affecting you, especially if it’s getting worse rather than better.’

‘I'm fine. I know the difference between feverish heat and ambient heat.’ He lowered himself to his haunches and pulled his glove off to prove the point, waving it in a circular motion around the spot. ‘Feel it.’ Jack caught the furtive expression on his face as it was illuminated by candlelight. ‘You know, hauntings are usually a localised drop in temperature. So, it's not a haunting then. Something else, perhaps.’

Jack stepped forward toward the spot, reaching down to feel it for himself and frowning. ‘You're right. It's definitely warmer here.’

‘Told you so.’

Jack tested a theory by moving his hand away and towards the wall, hovering it up and down each side of the hall, but not feeling anything like the heat that was emanating from underneath them. ‘But still doesn't explain why. Nor fireplace and no power, remember? Not to mention there’s nothing under the house apart from a disused basement which is as cold as our morgue.’

‘Still got that torch?’ Ianto asked. Jack reached into his pocket and tugged out the small device, handing it across. Ianto switched it on and they both blinked at the far brighter light it cast compared to their makeshift lantern. ‘Well, that’s interesting,’ Ianto mused. ‘Does that floorboard join look a little odd to you?’

Jack had to agree it did.
