Summary:
Jack is living the dream he thought would never come true.

‘I love lazy days off,’ Jack murmured, feeling the weight of Ianto lying over the top of him, both of them still sleepy and content in bed, without a care in the world. It was so rare that Jack planned on keeping Ianto in bed with him all day if he could.

Ianto lifted his head and reached for Jack's face, thumb making feathery strokes over his cheekbone for a few long minutes before speaking. ‘Jack? Can I ask you something?’

Jack wasn't sure he wanted Ianto to speak. He was happy just lying there, Ianto’s thumb brushing his face in slow, rhythmic strokes. Why ruin perfection? ‘Sure,’ he said, unable to deny his lover anything.

Ianto took his hand away from Jack's face, resting it over his heart. ‘Would you marry me?’

Jack’s mouth went dry. Had he misheard? ‘You… Yes,’ he said, cutting off his thoughts before his mouth could spoil the moment.

‘Yes?’ Clearly Jack's affirmation hadn't been convincing enough. He could agree on that much at least, caught totally off guard by the question. ‘Yes,’ he repeated before he lost the ability to speak altogether, feeling giddier and giddier as the reality came crashing down on him.

Ianto's face broke into a smile before he enveloped Jack's lips in a kiss. Jack pulled him down, kissing back with as much enthusiasm as he could muster.

‘I didn't think you wanted to get married,’ Jack said.

‘Are you kidding? It's all I could ever wish for.’ Ianto pushed away again, blue eyes sparkling with joy. ‘Let's do it today.’

‘Today?’ He assumed Ianto would want to plan it down to the last detail – a big affair with all their family and friends.

‘Why not? I love you. You're all I need.’

Jack could scarcely find his appetite as the toast sat untouched on his plate.

‘I've managed to book us at the registrar for half-twelve,’ Ianto said, breezing past. ‘Seems no one likes the lunch hour slot.’

Jack cast a glance up at the clock on the kitchen wall. His stomach did a backflip. In less than five hours they were going to be married. It felt crazy, but happy crazy.

‘Grab whatever you plan on wearing. I'll take them up to the one hour dry-cleaners for the once-over. Can you organise rings?’

Jack arched an eyebrow. ‘Seriously? You don't wanna do that together?’

‘I trust you to pick out something perfect. Now, go. Suit. I want to be there at nine sharp before everyone else.’

Jack thought it would be impossible to find the perfect wedding bands but it took him no time at all, as if it were simply meant to be. It was all he could do not to show them off when he got back, meeting Ianto in the hallway as he arrived with their freshly pressed suits. Then Ianto's phone rang. Jack listened to the one-sided conversation then frowned as Ianto hung up. ‘I've got to go sort this,’ he said.

‘Ianto, no. It's our wedding day.’

‘I know, cariad. I know! It'll only take an hour. Promise.’

‘It had better,’ Jack warned. ‘Otherwise you're going to be rushing to make it down the aisle only half dressed.’

‘I bet you'd like that.’ Ianto smirked and kissed him on the cheek. ‘Be careful what you wish for. I'm marrying you today if it kills me.’

Jack checked his watch again, giving the registrar an apologetic look. ‘He’ll be here any moment. Something urgent came up.’

Jack felt his pocket buzzing and pulled out his phone, assuming it was Ianto, about to apologise profusely, and curious as to what excuse he'd use to justify it. ‘You're late,’ he said.

‘Uh… Jack?’

Jack pulled the phone away from his face and checked the caller ID. ‘Andy? Sorry, but you're gonna have to call back later. Ianto and I are about to tie the knot and nothing is going to get in the way of that, not even Torchwood business.’ He grinned as he said it, feeling that warm buzz in his stomach start churning away again.

‘Jack.’ There was a pregnant pause. ‘There was an accident on Castle Street. A truck trying to swerve to miss a kid on a bike. It… crashed into another car.’ Jack felt himself go cold all over. ‘The paramedics did everything they could but… I'm sorry.’

The phone slipped from his trembling hand and there was a loud smashing sound as the screen hit the floor, shattering.

Jack gasped at the sound, lurching up like a drowned man. He felt sick and disoriented and out of breath. Within moments there was a pair of strong arms gripping him as he heaved short, laboured breaths, head spinning.

‘Jack! Jack, it's okay. It's okay. You're safe.’

He blinked, still breathing hard and saw Ianto wrapped around him, alive and whole. He burst into tears and Ianto hugged him tighter, shushing him with soothing noises and rubbing circles on his back to calm his hyperventilating. ‘It's okay. I'm here.’

When Jack was finally able to slow down his breathing and his tears, Ianto laid him back down, Jack’s head sinking into the pillow. With his sleeve Ianto brushed away the tears on Jack's cheeks and even the dribbling mucus from Jack's nose. He brushed a hand back through Jack’s hair, drawing it out of his face, and settled down over his chest. ‘You haven't had a nightmare like that for a long time,’ he said without judgement.

Jack didn't reply. His heart was still pounding too fast to speak. Just a dream.

They lay there for a long while until Ianto lifted his head and reached for Jack's face, thumb making feathery strokes over his cheekbone for a few long minutes before speaking. ‘Jack? Can I ask you something?’

Jack's chest tightened in panic. He gripped Ianto's hand on his cheek. ‘No. Just stay with me. Please.’

He nestled in against Jack's collarbone, warm and solid, hair tickling Jack's ear. ‘Always.’
