Summary: Gwen just wanted her one special day to go smoothly as planned.
'Owen, I've brought that medical equipment you– Bloody hell,' Ianto said, seeing Gwen for the first time, her pregnant bulge poking out from under a tank top that was way too small to contain it. Thank God she'd at least gotten rid of her belly button piercing a few months back. No self-respecting woman of thirty should be getting about with body piercings like she was still a teenager.
'Not helping,' Jack said, before Gwen could give Ianto a spray they way she'd already done to Jack and Owen for attempting to find the funny side of things. Jack would pay later for his Baby Jesus remark, just as soon as she figured out a suitable punishment. Now was not the time for ill thought out remarks. She was meant to be getting married. Today! Not impregnated with some giant alien egg thing all because of a stupid scratch on her arm the night before. Never mind that she only had herself to blame for having chosen to work late. God, being hungover from her hen's night would have been better than this.
'Bring that stuff over here,' Owen said, rescuing Ianto from her direct line of sight.
Gwen ignored the pair of them. She didn't want any more of Owen's tests unless he had something in there that was going to make this go away right now. 'I need to call Rhys. I need to get him here and explain.'
'You know it's bad luck for the groom to see his bride before she walks down the aisle right?' Ianto asked. He clamped his mouth when he saw the look she threw him. 'Um, actually I think I'll just go put on some coffee.' Gwen glared at him. 'Decaf, obviously.' Then Jack glared at him. 'Green tea?'
'Go!' they both yelled at him in unison. Owen joined him, figuring there was safety in numbers.
Gwen began to pace the room. 'This is not happening. Jack, tell me this is not happening.'
'You want me to tell you it's just a bad dream and you're going to wake up and find you're actually in bed having had a three way with me, Ianto and Owen?'
'Not funny.' She set her hands on her hips, wishing her stomach didn't stick out so much when she did. God, why did this have to happen today? 'What did I do to deserve this? What did Rhys do to deserve this?'
Jack sighed. 'You really wanna go ahead with the wedding?'
She nodded, tears pricking her eyes. 'I can't let him down, Jack. I just can't. All the shittiness I've put him through in this job and all he wanted was one day where everything goes right for a change. One day. Our one special day.' Her tears welled up sufficiently to start dripping down her cheeks. Sod these stupid hormones!
Jack stepped in front of her, as close as he could without encroaching on her limited personal space and avoiding bumping up against her exposed belly. He gently placed his hands on her arms, his touch reassuring her. 'If you really want to get married today then I'm not going to stop you, even if I think it's a bad idea. Rhys is lucky to have a woman like you that loves him so unconditionally. And you're lucky to have him. Not everybody gets the chance to meet the one person in the universe who is their true soul mate. I don't want to get in the way of you having found yours.'
She looked up to meet his eyes, wondering if Rhys really was her one true love or if she'd missed something in Jack, then quickly dismissed the thought.' What about you, Jack? Have you ever been lucky enough to find your one true love?'
'No.' That one word answer brought such a despair into the pit of her stomach. No one in all of Jack's long life, not even Ianto, who loved him more than he'd ever openly admit. 'I've got forever, Gwen. Until someone comes along who can match me for that, love will just be a fleeting thing. A good thing, but never long enough or strong enough. That's why you don't know just how lucky you truly are.'
'I do know,' she said, appreciating it fully for perhaps the first time in her life. 'That's why I'm marrying Rhys today even if it kills me.'
Jack smiled, bending down to kiss her on the cheek. 'I never doubted it for a second, Gwen Cooper. That's why we're going to do absolutely everything we can to make sure that happens. If ever there was a day to have luck on our side, it's gotta be today. Nobody ruins a Torchwood wedding and lives to tell the tale.'
