Summary: Watching a teammate go down is the hardest part of the job. A double drabble.
Ianto really hated this job sometimes. It was dangerous, of course, but no one took that danger on more than Jack, usually with devastating consequences.
Ianto hadn’t seen the laser fire from the rogue aliens they’d been chasing, but he’d heard the way it sliced the air before hitting Jack squarely in the chest. He dropped like a stone, just lying there in the middle of the road. His head lolled to the side, away from the alien threat, as if his sole purpose whilst still not completely dead was to check that they hadn’t hurt Ianto. He felt enormous guilt that Jack would waste his energy worrying about Ianto. It should be the other way around.
‘I’ve got them!’ Gwen yelled, running past him, gun in each hand. ‘You look after Jack!’
Ianto didn’t need telling twice. He jogged towards him, dropping down beside his lover as Jack’s eyes rolled around, becoming disoriented as the injury took its toll. ‘It’s okay,’ he assured Jack in a quiet voice, even if Jack was no longer capable of understanding the words. No matter how many times he had to watch Jack slowly die, he’d never leave Jack to face it alone.
