Summary: Lyanna has a late night visitor.
Lyanna fingered the delicate crown of roses in her lap as she sat by the fire in one of the many towers of Harrenhal. Memories of the tourney felt like a dream, and the only battle of the day should could now remember clearly was the last, when Rhaegar Targaryen had bested Ser Barristan Selmy, a feat none thought possible. Ser Barristan was the greatest knight of a generation and rightly deserved his place amongst the Kingsguard, but it was the young, handsome Prince Rhaegar that had claimed victory today. Not only had he claimed victory, but also her heart. The winter roses were the most beautiful shade of violet, and matched Rhaegar's eyes perfectly.
There was a gentle knock at the door which made Lyanna frown. It was decidedly late for guests, and her brothers Brandon and Eddark would be well into their cups by now, celebrating the day. She set down the crown and padded to the door. 'Who is it?'
'It's me, my love,' came the gentle voice.
Without hesitation, Lyanna pulled open the door, coming face to face with the most beautiful man she'd ever laid eyes on, who made her heart flutter. 'It is late,' she said when he took her hands in his.
'I could not wait another moment to see you again,' Rhaegar replied, drawing her close.
She leaned her forehead until it was touching his. 'You should not have given me your crown, my sweet,' she chastised him. 'Elia is your wife and beloved.'
Rhaegar reached up and brushed her hair behind her ear. 'It was meant for the most beautiful maiden. Elia can never match you for radiance and grace.'
She blushed at the honesty with which he confessed his thoughts. She had always admired the way he refused to shy away from what he believed. 'Robert was furious afterwards,' she said. 'Had the tourney not been over, he would have challenged you.'
'And I would have accepted, and insisted that the prize for victory be your hand.'
She reached forward and brushed his cheek with her fingers. Rhaegar was married and she was betrothed. To have done so would have been to enrage houses on all sides.
Rhaegar seemed to sense her thoughts. 'Come away to Dorne with me,' he begged. 'I'll have have my marriage annulled and then we can be wed.'
'It is an impossible union,' she argued, though without any conviction.
'I cannot bear to think of you returning to Winterfell, or to Storm's End. Please let us be married.'
'You would have me forsake the gods for you?'
Rhaegar held her close. 'Never. The Old Gods, the Seven, the Many Faced, it does not matter. We shall be united by all the gods if only you would say yes. If not tonight or on the morn, then send a raven to me and I shall take you away where we can be happy for all of our days.'
Lyanna smiled and kissed him. 'Yes,' she said.
