Summary: Ianto is left once again to perform a miracle.
'I need you to see if you can find me another one of these,' Jack announced, standing in front of Ianto's desk, alien device in hand.
'What is it?'
'No idea. But I'm pretty sure I've seen one before. I pressed the button to turn it on but it didn't don't anything. Maybe it's broken. Would be great to find another one and see if that's true.'
'What have I told you about pushing buttons when you don't know what they do?' Jack would one day open up a black hole on them. Once upon a time he'd been big on not touching things until he knew what they did, but these days curiosity often overrode caution.
Jack shrugged. 'Nothing ventured nothing gained. So, find me another one?'
'Seriously? Have you seen how big the archives are? There are whole sections I still need a map to navigate, and other sections we haven't even begun to start wading through. You might as well ask me to pull a rabbit out of my hat as to find something with no name, no place of origin, no date and no bloody idea what it does.'
'Okay, okay, no need to get so snippy. I just thought you'd be more than up to the challenge.'
Ianto narrowed his eyes at Jack. 'Flattery, or attempted flattery, will get you nowhere.'
'Please,' Jack begged.
Ianto snatched the thing from his hand. 'Fine. I'll see what I can do, but don't expect me to work miracles. Now go away before I get really annoyed with you.'
'Love you. Bye,' Jack quickly said, pecking him on the cheek and making his hastily and well-advised escape.
Ianto groaned out a sigh as he was left there standing alone with the alien object and no clue where to begin. Jack had given him some hellish assignments over the years but this took the cake. A weevil chase seemed more appealing right now. He wished Tosh were here to figure it out. She'd have whatever it was sussed in no time.
Jack was halfway through an email to the First Minister when he caught Ianto standing in the doorway from the corner of his eye. 'If you're coming to ask about coffee, don't worry. I made do with a tea about an hour ago.'
Ianto bristled at the comment. He'd have had time for coffee if he hadn't been tasked with a job that Jack had obviously assumed would take him hours if not days. He walked over and put the two items down on the desk, identical in every respect.
'You found it! I honestly didn't like our chances, but... How did you manage it?'
'I'm just that good,' Ianto replied, He didn't advertise the fact that it had started making a buzzing noise as soon as he got within thirty feet of the one stored in their archives.
'So, what is it?'
'No idea,' Ianto replied. Let Jack figure out that it was a set of walkie talkies.
