Summary: Aliens have Jack darting all over the city but it looks like Ianto has hit the bullseye.
'Take the next left,' came the instruction from Ianto as Jack gunned the SUV’s engines as hard as they’d go. 'When you see Thurgood Street, turn right.'
'I know how to get there, Ianto,' Jack reminded him, focused more on swerving back out of the oncoming traffic so that he could finally get past the white minivan that had been positively crawling in front of him. Where did these people learn to drive?
'I know,' came the unruffled response from Ianto. 'I only thought you might like a shortcut to get there. You know, since you’re having so much trouble.'
Jack bit the inside of his lip to prevent himself from saying something to Ianto that he might later come to regret. He was only trying to help after all.
Jack threw the car into a sharp right turn, narrowly missing being hit by the Harwood’s lorry that was, like him, not slowing down for anyone. 'I’m almost there,' he reported in. 'Update.'
There was a quick tap of keys. 'Yes. Confirmed. No. Wait... It’s gone again.'
'Where?'
'Cathedral Road, just near the university.'
Jack hit the brakes hard, spinning the wheel madly in a suicidal u-turn. He let out a cry of sheer frustration. Stupid teleporting aliens! This was the fifth time they’d managed to skip out of him just moments before he got there. He was getting sick of darting all across town trying the catch them, even with Ianto doing all the tracking work for him.
He sped through a red light, not caring how many motorists he upset. They’d have bigger problems if these creatures escaped capture.
'Jack?'
'Yeah?' He waited for new directions. 'Where have they shifted now?' It was inevitable that was what Ianto was going to tell him. Honestly, they had to cut a break sometime! It wasn’t fair that they seemed to know Jack was after them.
'Well, see that’s the thing. They have shifted again only this time I think we’ve probably got them where we want them.'
'Fifty feet at the bottom of the bay?' Was that too much to hope for?
'Not quite. They’ve shifted and ended up on the quay, which as you know happens to put them within feet of the protective dampening field we have around the hub.'
'And?'
'And they may have just wandered a few feet inside its field now, stopping them from teleporting back out. I imagine a big gun pointed at them would probably stop them from walking back out.'
'You’re kidding!' You couldn’t buy luck like that. 'So, what are you waiting for?'
'You. I’ve seen the way you drive. You could be here in less than two minutes.'
'Ianto, for once I’m prepared to forgo the big heroic moment of storming in to save the day.'
'Really?'
'Yep, this one’s all yours. Round 'em up and I’ll see you back there in two minutes.'
'Don’t hurry on my account. I’d like to enjoy this moment and get my money’s worth.'
