Summary: Jack has to face up to his ghosts one last time. A double drabble.

Jack shut the lid on the small box and slipped it into his coat pocket before brushing the residual dirt from his hands. Funny how a thing so ordinary as dirt could hold so much potential. Rather like a single human life. Not his, of course. He'd keep living forever, watching those amazing mortal human lives wink out one by one like dying stars.

He cast his eyes up at the ramshackle building atop the grassy hill. The most haunted pub in Wales and he was about to cross its threshold, knowing what was likely lying there in wait for him. He had to do this, though. That way he could leave Earth with a clean conscience - or at least as clean as Jack's conscience ever got. Closing the rift was the only safe thing to do if he was leaving. He couldn't stay here. It hurt too much, all those humans he'd lost along the way.

He sucked in a breath and blew it out, starting up the hill. Stars pricked the night sky. So many places he could go when this was done. Just one more ghost he had to face before he'd be allowed to live again.
