Summary: A huge explosion has woken the residents of Cardiff.
Gwen might not have woken up except for her husband prodding her in the back. It was usually the other way around, with her waking up Rhys, and sometimes not at all. He'd learned to be a very heavy sleeper with all her comings and goings, but tonight that didn't seem to be the case as he now started shaking her shoulder.
'Gwen…'
She half-heartedly tried to bat him away. 'What?' she mumbled sleepily.
'Didn't you feel that?' he said, still in a low whisper, though why she didn't know. It wasn't as if they had anyone else to be quiet for, and now that she was awake, there didn't seem any point at all.
'Feel what?'
'I dunno,' Rhys replied unhelpfully. 'Like an earthquake or something. A bloody short one, mind you, but there was a definite shake of the house.'
She was about to tell him he was being ridiculous and to go back to sleep when there was a second boom that made the light fixtures tinkle and the walls judder just a little bit. Whatever it was, it was some distance off, but unmistakably there.
'Is it like an alien spaceship crash landed or something?' Rhys said, beginning their long game of pointless speculation as Gwen tossed off the bed covers and began dressing on autopilot, pulling back on the clothes she'd only been wearing a few hours ago. What did he expect her to say? Oh yes, Rhys. Judging by that particular booming sound it's definitely a Class Three long haul cruiser, probably Arcateen.
Whilst she was still battling to get socks on, she grabbed her phone and dialled.
'You heard the blast too?' Jack answered, not even bothering with the formalities.
'I felt something,' she replied, wedging the phone between her shoulder as Rhys tossed her second boot at her, tugging it on.
'Only a few blocks from our place,' Jack confirmed. 'Meet us there. Just follow the billowing orange flames.'
'Flames?' Rhys interrupted, hearing Jack's booming voice loud and clear, even without the phone on speaker. 'Are we under attack?'
Gwen reached across the bed and pecked him on the cheek. 'Stay here and don't worry. We've got this sorted.' Whatever this was.
Gwen sped the whole way to the scene. Jack had been right. It wasn't hard to find, a huge ball of fire licking up the sides of houses and over the rooftops in an otherwise quiet suburban street.
'What are we dealing with?' she asked as soon as she was out of the car. 'Alien fusion reactor malfunction, Sontaran first strike?' The possibilities were endless.
Ianto yawned, clearly as sleep deprived as she was. He looked remarkably calm all things considered. 'Nope. For once it really is just a gas leak explosion. I tried telling the rubberneckers that, but they saw us arrive in the SUV, so they don't believe a word of it.'
'All the more reason for us to go home and leave them to it,' Jack said.
