As Jack lowered the shotgun in his arms, his anger was replaced by a keen sense of revulsion. It wasn't just the smell of the spent cartridges, leaving a pall of foul smog hanging in the air. It was the distinctive metallic scent of blood, mixed with sweat and fear. A lesser man would have upended their stomach, but Jack had seen terrible things. Even so, this almost trumped them all.
The reports of missing people in the beacons had him suspicious. He'd been right of course, but he certainly hadn't wanted to discover the explanation the way they had. As he took in his team, battered, bruised and bleeding, he felt the familiar pangs of guilt. Gwen was in obvious pain from her earlier gunshot wound, Tosh and Owen both displayed evidence of beatings, and as for Ianto…
Jack forced down the lump forming in the back of his throat. He'd wanted answers, but his team had to earn them the hard way - as close to ending up dead as they could be - whilst he remained relatively unscathed. It wasn't fair, not by a long shot. He had a thousand lives to sacrifice, even if they didn't know it.
