Summary: Some aspects of the job Jack had been avoiding turn out easier than he expected. A double drabble.
Gwen watched the curious expression playing over her boss's face as they walked back towards the car. She didn't know him very well yet - at all, really - but there was something about that look that made her want to ask the question anyway. 'What's on your mind?'
Jack's hands never left his pockets as he continued striding, looking now at her instead of that street. 'We didn't retcon them,' he said, referring to Carys and her father. 'That's standard protocol. Let them carry on with their lives oblivious to the trauma.'
'Instead we reunited a father and her daughter who will probably be closer now than they would have been if they didn't know what she'd been through.' Carys was young and would bounce back from this, Gwen was sure.
'A silver lining for every cloud, huh?' Jack asked, pausing mid stride, blue eyes boring into her.
'What it means to be human in the twenty-first century,' she replied, reminding him of the task he'd set her.
'Torchwood doing more to help people,' Jack added, reminded of the task she'd set him.
'Exactly.'
Jack's expression changed, a contented smile settling in place. 'Hardly feels like work at all, does it?'
