Pairing Jack/Ianto
Disclaimer Torchwood sadly doesn’t belong to me, but I treat it better.
Ianto knew exactly how to push all of Jack's buttons. With just those few words he'd triggered Jack into defensive mode. Once upon a time, it had only worked the other way around, with Jack able to squeeze Ianto in the same way. Somewhere along the line though, Ianto had divined all of Jack’s trigger points, and used them to good effect. He felt guilty that Ianto thought he considered anything more important than them.
‘There’s just something I need to check out' he said, hoping it sounded authoritative. It probably could have waited, truth be told, but it was playing in his mind and he wanted Christmas day to be carefree so he could just focus on those people that mattered to him.
‘Tonight? It couldn't possibly wait twenty four hours? I checked the rift logs by the way, so I know we’re in the clear on that front.’ He paused to extract his handkerchief and blow into it before continuing on. Whether it was genuine, or staged to add a layer of sympathy, Jack couldn't say. ‘Christmas, Jack. That’s all I ask. Once I’m comatose from being filled with more turkey, pudding and champagne than is physically possible, you’re welcome to do what you like, but just for twenty four hours for the whole year it’d be nice if you could just be my normal, non-Torchwood, non-immortal, not needing the save the world every five minutes, boyfriend.
‘You know what this job is like,’ Jack said, starting to get defensive and feeling an argument coming on that he didn’t want to have on tonight of all nights. ‘Besides, it’s just something personal. Probably nothing.’
‘Oh, now it’s personal? Well, that makes all the difference! Why didn’t you say so? I didn’t think we were still doing personal secret keeping stuff anymore.’
Jack began to feel deflated by so much guilt-tripping. ‘We’re not. I just didn’t want to drag you into it. Not tonight. Not when you’re not a hundred percent. It was true. Ianto worked hard enough and had worked through as much of his cold as he could without attracting Jack's ire. ’
‘We’re a team, Jack. And right now, just in case you hadn't noticed, it’s just the two of us. You know I don’t like you going out there on your own. What if you need backup? Or just someone to keep you out of trouble, so the intimation went unsaid. ’
‘Like I said, it's probably nothing.’
‘Jack…’ There was such a caring, beseeching tone in his voice that Jack virtually crumbled under the weight of it. ‘A problem shared is a problem halved. Whatever it is, you can tell me. That’s what I’m here for. There's nothing we can’t face so long as we face it together.’
Jack knew he was right. ‘I know, but your cold…’
‘I’ll live. If I can face my sister’s incessant nagging, then I can handle anything Torchwood throws at me. Let’s face it, we both know which of those options I'd rather face.’
Jack chuckled. Ianto would have faced down a horde of fire breathing dragons before having supper with his sister. Jack reluctantly agreed. Like I said, it’s probably nothing.’
‘So I'll come with you .Then when it turns out to be nothing we can both laugh about what a stupid argument this was to have in the first place.’ There was no arguing with Ianto when he was this determined.
‘I warn you they'll be no snuggling on the back of the SUV. This is work.’
Ianto rolled his eyes. ‘You always say that.’
