Jack peered into the wound site with a magnifying glass, checking for any residual flecks of broken glass or other detritus that would prevent it from healing up cleanly. ‘Well, I don’t think we’re going to have to amputate,’ he announced, plastering on a satisfied grin as Owen groaned. He knew Owen hated it when he got to play doctor, which only made the task more enjoyable, save for the fact that it meant he was one team member down.
‘I could've told you that,’ Owen grumbled.
‘Except the gash is on the back of your thigh and there was no way you could have treated it yourself. Not without growing a seven foot neck.There’s a lot of benefits to having retractable neck vertebrae,’ Jack carried on. ‘There’s this species in the Parcana Nebula…’
Owen groaned again. ‘Save me your filthy innuendo, Harkness.’
‘Still, you’ll be out of action for at least two weeks with this leg. That much muscle damage needs zero movement until it can heal.’
‘Yes, thank you Mister I-Don’t-Have-A-Medical-Degree.’
Jack reached for a length of bandage. ‘I’m serious, Owen. You’ll need someone to stay with you, make you meals, help you bathe…’
‘Tosh can check in every now and then. It’s not like I can’t get a curry or a pizza delivered.’
‘And who’s going to get up and answer the door, huh?’ Jack said, scuppering that suggestion. He shook his head. ‘Sorry, but you can’t have Tosh, and it breaks my heart to say that. She’s booked for that UNIT conference in Malmo and I’m not pulling her out. Ianto on the other hand is free.’
‘You don’t need him?’
Jack smirked. ‘Such a loaded question. He’ll see to your every need.’
‘Every need?’
‘If you ask nicely.’
‘Only if I’m really bloody unlucky.’
