torchwood100Summary: Tosh can't figure out why her device won't power up. A triple drabble.
Tosh growled in frustration and shoved the device away from her on the desk, folding her arms and scowling at it. She hated not being able to puzzle things out.
‘Are you still working on that?’ Jack asked, having given her the device knowing full well what it was but wanting to set her a challenge. Life was apparently just boring if he told them what everything was.
‘It’s driving me crazy,’ Tosh replied. ‘I know what it does, I just can’t figure out any way to power it.’ She pointed to the small hole on the side of the device. ‘I’ve tried everything to charge it up but it just won’t work.’
Jack cocked his head. ‘What shape is the hole on the inside?’
‘Square,’ Tosh said. ‘I’ve created square shaped adaptor plugs for every power source we have, but it just won’t take up the charge. I’m at my wits end.’
Jack smiled. ‘Ianto? Do you know where we keep the toys in the archive?’
Ianto made an awkward noise. ‘What kind of toys?’
‘Those meant for children.’
‘Ah, yes. I assumed that’s what you meant, obviously.’
Jack rolled his eyes. ‘Obviously. Think you could bring up the box?’
Ianto did as instructed, returning with a large crate which Jack began to paw through. ‘There’s got to be something in here… Ah ha!’ he cried, pulling out a small locomotive engine made out of tin. ‘Perfect.’ He held it side on and yanked out the metal key, handing it to Tosh. ‘This should do it.’
She frowned at it. ‘A toy train key?’ Then the penny dropped. ‘Oh! It’s not a power cable hole, it’s for a key.’ Then she looked at Jack. ‘Do they really have wind up technology in the future?’
He shrugged. ‘Works, doesn’t it?’
