Summary: Jack's heroics out in the field leave Ianto wringing his hands. A triple drabble.
‘Torchwood Officer down!’ Owen’s voice rang out loud over the speakers inside the hub. Both Tosh and Ianto froze, waiting for more details. It might have been Gwen or Jack. Either way, it sounded like the exchange with the alien wasn’t going well, and now the worst possible news was being relayed back to the hub.
‘Cover me!’ The sound of Gwen asking Owen to lay down cover fire confirmed it for them. Jack was the one injured in the line of duty.
Ianto exchanged silent worried glances with Tosh. There was no CCTV in the vicinity so they were relying on Owen to be their eyes and ears out in the field. Stuck inside and miles away, they were powerless to help their teammates. They could only speculate on how bad things were.
Ianto felt a lead weight drop into the pit of his stomach. Jack was out there, hurt, possibly dead or dying. Trying not to show just how much the thought terrified him was hard. No one knew about their relationship, but it didn’t make the panic any less. He wasn’t sure what he’d do if Jack died. He’d barely gotten over losing Lisa. He couldn’t lose Jack as well.
‘Owen, what’s going on?’ Tosh demanded to know. There was a volley of gunfire and then the words ‘Yeah, I can see him moving! Gwen, get him out of there!’
Ianto heard Tosh exhale loudly. ‘He’s okay,’ she said, even though she couldn’t be certain. He was alive for now though and that was something.
‘He’s Jack,’ Ianto heard himself reply. The words sounded so nonchalant, coming out like that. Thank god, he silently added, loosening his grip on the back of Tosh’s chair. No matter how dire, he simply wasn’t ready to admit the truth yet.
