drabble_zoneSummary: Jack has been sent to the States for a singular mission. A triple drabble.
‘This is, quite frankly, an outrage.’ General Groves paced the small office, looking like a man who desperately needed a holiday. Jack let him continue to pace, hoping that he’d eventually run out of steam. ‘Our prototype research has been set back six months. Six months!’ the general reiterated. He spun to give Jack a face full of that outrage. ‘I know it was you,’ he accused.
‘I had nothing to do with it, sir,’ he replied, making sure he stood straight when he replied, hands clasped behind his back. ‘Have you considered that you have a spy amongst the ranks?’ More than one, Jack knew. That Klaus Fuchs fellow for starters.
‘I have,’ came the sharp reply. ‘And he’s standing in front of me, disgracing that uniform, all the while claiming to be a special envoy from this Torchwood Institute.’ Groves stood before him, spitting distance away. ‘Whose side are you on, Captain? America or your paymasters in Britain?’ He didn’t wait for a reply and Jack didn’t offer him one.
‘I want you off this base immediately, and don’t think of stepping foot in Los Alamos again, or I'll have you stripped of every rank and title and thrown in jail!’
‘Yes, sir.’ Jack walked out, down the dust laden street and beyond the guarded checkpoint, receiving only a salute for his troubles. He waited until he was out of sight before pulling a mobile phone from his pocket and dialling.
‘Did you get it?’
Jack rolled his eyes. ‘Of course I got it,’ the prototype, shrunken to the size of a marble, still sat heavily in his pocket.
‘Good. That’ll put a spanner in the works.’
‘Yeah,’ Jack agreed. ‘Shame about that.’ It wouldn’t stop the Manhattan Project, but Torchwood only cared about the stolen alien technology.
