drabble_zoneSummary: The team's plan for a big surprise end with a different kind of surprise. A triple drabble.
'I think this is a stupid idea,' Owen grumbled, giving the colourful crepe paper steamers now adorning his desk a dismissive flick.
'Everyone made sure we celebrated your birthday,' came Ianto's reply. 'I didn't see you complaining then.'
Owen swatted him away as he approached with party poppers, trying to foist one on him. 'We don't even know if it's really his birthday. With all the back and forth time travel it's a wonder anyone bloody knows. I doubt even Jack knows when it is, or how old he actually is.'
Ianto tutted. 'It's the date he's told us so that's good enough. Besides, does it really matter just so long as we celebrate it once a year, every year, on the same date?'
'Do we have to go to all this fuss though?' Decorating the hub seemed a bit much, as did all the sending Jack on a wild goose chase long enough to do it.
'Don't be such a stick in the mud, Owen,' Tosh chastised.
'Jack loves parties and he loves surprises,' Ianto said. 'Well, the good kind of surprises, anyway. He'll love it. And he loves being the centre of attention.'
'That much is true,' Owen agreed.
'Ooh! He's coming!' Ianto cried as the computer pinged.
Owen rolled his eyes and gripped the party popper, knowing the sooner it was over the better and that at least there might be beer.
They were about to shout the second Jack came through the door but their cries died on their lips as Jack's expression made all the joy in the room evaporate. He wandered past disconsolately. 'Thanks, but maybe another time,' he said, quietly walking to his office and shutting the door behind him, leaving them all in stunned silence.
'Told you this was a stupid idea.'
