drabble_zone Summary: Gwen doesn't appreciate Jack's orders when he's not even around to receive the fruits of their labour. A triple drabble.
Gwen knew she looked grumpy because she felt grumpy. It was hard not to after having spent all night at the hub, tracking down obscure research for Jack without the slightest hint of what she was meant to be looking for and why. At least she usually had a brief. Last night all she'd gotten from Jack was one bad-tempered phone call demanding she move her arse and give up any hope of a quiet night in bed with Rhys.
Ianto was late, or at least late for him. That got on her nerves as well. It didn't matter that Tosh had also been up all night alongside her equally baffled with her own research task. Why Jack needed to know the full history of a manky little pub in Radyr was anyone's guess. Jack was like that sometimes. He enjoyed stringing them along with mystery. Right now the mystery was how she was going to extricate herself before the day got underway in earnest so she could go home and sleep.
'Morning,' Ianto greeted them. It was polite, if not chirpy, just like it always was. At least he must have had some sleep, and Gwen selfishly begrudged him that. 'Coffee?'
'Please,' she said, hoping she didn't sound too rude. 'Jack's had us here all night.'
'Oh?' He sounded genuinely surprised. She couldn't figure out why. They often worked odd hours and Ianto was usually well informed. 'Is he in?' That too seemed a strange question. Jack was always here, except when he was off on secret business. Even then, Ianto seemed to know more than he let on.
'Coffee,' Gwen replied. 'Thanks,' she remembered to add. Only after that could she contemplate answering the latter. When she found Jack she was going to have stern words for him.
