Summary: Owen is convinced that their alien object is broken. A double drabble.
‘Just once I’d like the rift to give us something cool,’ Owen said, as he and Jack trawled around the bowling alley long after closing time, when the rattle of pins and the rolling of balls had come to a silent end. ‘Like a seventy inch, flat screen television,’ he offered. ‘Or a brand new Playstation.’
Jack grinned at the less than altruistic suggestions. ‘Even if it did, you know that it would be quarantined for a year until all the residual rift radiation has dissipated.’
‘Put me on the waitlist if it does,’ Owen replied, then sighed loudly. ‘No seventy inch TV or Playstation today, either,’ he said, having found the one object that didn’t belong in a bowling alley. ‘Whatever it is, I think it's broken,’ he said. He gave it a gentle shake, listening to the sound of small particles tumbling around inside it. ‘More junk to stash in the archives.’
‘Probably true,’ Jack agreed, ‘but it's not broken.’
Owen gave it another shake. ‘D’you not hear that? Broken bits inside and everything.’
Jack took it from him and gave it another shake. ‘They're meant to be inside. Haven't you ever seen an alien baby rattle before?’
