Summary: Not everything that comes through the rift has an obvious use. A double drabble.
Owen gingerly picked up the long metal tube with a gloved hand, holding it between two fingers and letting it dangle. ‘Please tell me it’s something G-rated,’ he said, looking at Jack and hoping for an equally G-rated reply. He looked at Ianto then back at Jack. ‘If it’s not, please just lie.’ He couldn’t cope with the pair of them getting a kick out of whatever he was holding.
‘It’s a neural light emitter,’ Jack replied.
‘A what?’
‘It’s a torch.’ Jack took it from him and held it, making it flash on and off again twice.
‘How’d you do that? It hasn’t got any buttons.’
‘That would be the neural part,’ Ianto said, holding out a case to put it in. ‘All you have to do is think on or off. No power source required. Torchwood One had heaps of them.’
Owen curved an eyebrow. ‘A torch? That’s it? How’s that going to help us defend against the future?’ A cool laser gun or some kind of supersonic grenade would be a lot more useful.
‘Well, if we ended up in the dark it would be pretty handy,’ Ianto replied.
‘If the world’s gone dark, we’re already screwed.’
