Summary: Ianto is going for a new look, which seems to have multiple benefits.
He picked up the glasses and examined them. He was sure it wasn’t just a case of getting old. He just didn’t get old these days. Jack might complain about the odd grey hair here and there, but Ianto got the feeling that perhaps those had always been there. It was just a case of Jack being more diligent in seeking them out so that he had something to complain about.
He’d never really noticed before, but perhaps like Jack he just had a whole lot more time on his hands now and took notice of these things. Perhaps reading for hours on end had always given him that slightly pinched headache between his eyes, but he’d always just been too busy to notice. It wasn’t a degrading of his vision at all, but merely a problem he’d never bothered to correct.
Slipping them on for the first time felt odd. He’d never really been a glasses person. Wales just wasn’t built for sunny days, and when they did deign to make themselves known, the last thing he wanted was to block out what little sunshine had managed to penetrate those bleak Welsh skies.
Nothing looked any different until he looked down at the screen in front of him. That was different, noticing the bifocal magnification coming into play. Everything was just that little bit sharper. He could still shoot something the size of a chicken from fifty yards, but staring at the blurry font on his computer screen now made all the difference. Why hadn’t he done this years ago? He’d never noticed that tiny fuzziness. It was ever so subtle, but after a few hours of looking at nothing but that, was it any wonder his head felt like it wanted to explode?
He looked up from the screen and the world went a bit fuzzy as his eyes tried to adjust. Ah, need to look up with your eyes, not your head. That was something he was going to have to get used to. And there was that sensation of having something resting on his nose, like he permanently wanted to reach up and scratch it, only to find it was the glasses, and not some wayward itch.
‘You’re wearing glasses,’ Jack said.
‘Well spotted.’
‘Since when do you wear glasses?’
‘Since it turns out that I probably needed them five years ago. Just for long stretches of reading. Don’t worry, I’m not going blind.’
‘I wasn’t worried,’ Jack replied. ‘I was just going to say that I think they make you look very sexy and intellectual.’
‘I was always very sexy and intellectual,’ Ianto countered.
‘Well, yeah, but now…’ Jack gave him one of those leers. ‘The suits, the ties, the specs…’ Jack growled.
‘I’m not going to be wearing them in bed, Jack,’ Ianto confirmed for him. He wasn’t entirely sure they weren’t going to get in the way of Jack kissing him as it were.
‘Who said anything about wearing them in bed? There’s still the desk, the kitchen, Owen’s medical bay, the cells, the hothouse, interrogation room, the archives, the boardroom…. I think I’m going to enjoy slipping those babies off that very handsome face.’
He really had wasted those last five years, he decided. ‘Perhaps you could practice now,’ he suggested. There had to be a first time for everything and he might as well get accustomed to his new accessory sooner rather than later.
