Summary: Sam knew he wasn't cut out to be a man of the Night's Watch. A double drabble.
'I'm never going to get the hang of this,' Sam complained, throwing down the blunted sword. It felt ten times heavier than when he'd started his training.
'You can't expect to be a master swordsman overnight, Sam,' Jon replied.
'How did you get so good, then?'
How to explain to Sam that he'd been doing this since he was big enough to loft a wooden tourney sword? Robb and Theon had always been better than him. They were bigger for a start, and the sons of lords. Jon had to work extra hard to keep up with them. He could appreciate how Sam must have felt being a complete novice amongst sellswords and cutthroats, and boys like him who'd been doing this for years.
'It's just hard work, Sam,' he replied.
'I'm really not meant for this. I never was. Ser Alliser will have me gutted just for fun. Assuming I don't manage it myself.'
Jon grimaced. Sam would never be a ranger, he just needed to prevent himself from being poked full of holes at the first swing of a sword. 'There's always tomorrow, and the day after that. I'm not giving up, so you don't give up either.'
