It was Summer’s pathetic howls that garnered attention. They were barely more than squeaks from the young direwolf pup, yet it was enough.

It was Jory who found Bran lay crumpled in  a heap on the ground beside his small bodyguard, his body twisted unnaturally from his fall from the tower.

Jory couldn’t tell if Bran was alive or dead, as he gathered the tiny body in his arms, but the wolf ceased its howls immediately.

‘I’ve got you,’ he said. He cast a glance down at the grey wolf with his questioning golden eyes. ‘I’ve got him,’ he promised.
