Summary: Jack is determined to get a sneak peak of Ianto's singing skills.
Jack was still grinning from ear to ear as he watched Ianto fussing around his office, moving paperwork from one side to the other. 'Come on, you're not even going to say anything?' Jack asked.
Ianto paused only momentarily. 'Not sure to what there is to say.'
Jack folded his arms and continued watching him. 'Gwen's little plan? Your not so little admission?'
Ianto sighed. 'What? That I arranged tickets for us to go somewhere, so that we might have what some people might call a nice night out?' He wasn't entirely sure what Jack would think when he was told he was going to the Welsh Amateur Operatic Contest finals, but he assumed he'd just go along with it as something Ianto was interested in. Jack was forever humming or singing something, so he'd just taken it for granted Jack would enjoy it.
'I bet you wish you were up on that stage,' Jack said.
Ianto scoffed. 'Hardly. I get quite enough excitement here every day, thank you very much.'
Jack stood up and grabbed him on one of his many trips across the narrow space. 'I knew you could sing! It's so obvious now when I think about it. Those deep vocal chords, that sexy timbre, that deeply ingrained Welsh heritage. Why have you been holding back all this time?'
Ianto quirked an eyebrow at him. 'I think you do enough singing for both of us, don't you? Besides, I'm not very good.'
'Good enough that Gwen thinks you'll be able to lure our mystery alien out of hiding. Good enough that you've been fidgeting for the past hour. If you thought you couldn't sing, you wouldn't be worried that you might attract the wrong kind of attention, if you get my drift. I know what you're like just before a big mission. You get all uptight and OCD.'
'I do not get OCD,' he protested.
Jack smirked at him. 'You're cleaning my office.'
'Because it's a mess!'
Ianto continued to fidget in Jack's arms. 'Just a few bars,' Jack insisted. 'Warm up those lovely pipes of yours.'
'No.'
'Come on.'
'No.'
'Please? I'll treat you to one of my show tunes.'
'Please don't.'
'What if we did a duet?'
Ianto looked at him incredulously. 'You want to sing a duet?'
'Anything to get a chance to hear what I've been missing out on all this time.'
'Well, I'm sure you'll hear plenty when I have to leave in an hour and go rehearse with Drew. Poor guy doesn't stand a chance.' He was still amazed Gwen had convinced Drew to compete. If he'd lost the love of his life, he'd crawl into bed and never get out again. He certainly wouldn't be trying to carry on doing something that was uniquely special to them with some complete stranger.
'You do something to me...' Jack crooned, beginning to sway them in his arms, '...something deep inside...'
Ianto gave a furtive glance around, hoping Gwen couldn't see them. He hated it when Jack went all soppy on him. Jack carried on regardless.
'I'm hanging on the wire, for a love I'll never find...'
Ianto sighed. Jack just had to go and choose that song, didn't he? Jack seemed to think this was officially theirsong now. He let the next words slip quietly out. 'You do something wonderful, then chase it all away, mixing my emotions, that throws me back again.'
Jack beamed at him, humming a little more as they swayed, before pulling back. 'Beautiful. Those Welsh vowels get me every time.'
'Are you done humiliating me, now?' Why he'd ever confessed to Gwen in the first place that he'd done a little singing in his time, he'd never know. Better that she thought he was just quietly obsessed with some silly singing competition.
'You have a strange definition of humiliation, Ianto Jones.'
'Well, it goes nicely with everything else strange around here, in that case.' He fished his car keys out of his pocket. 'I'd better go. Don't want to be late for my big rehearsal.'
Jack grinned. 'We'll be right there with you, keeping an eye on things.'
Ianto rolled his eyes. 'Don't I know it?' Never going to live this down, he thought. Never.
