Summary: Things are hotting up down at the beach.

'How's this for beach weather?' Jack exclaimed, hopping out of the SUV, his smile splitting his face in two. He let the sea breeze whip across his face, taking the edge off the heat of the day. To be honest, he wouldn't have minded the scorching heat one bit, but his friends might not have agreed with him. For them, it was perfectly hot enough in the high twenties.

'Finally, the rift did us a favour,' Owen said, feeling the warm sand sneak in between his feet and his flip-flops.

It was the fifth day in a row of sizzling temperatures, but at least now they had an explanation for it, and it had nothing to do with El Nino. A device down in the archives had decided it was fed up with being neglected and had mysteriously powered itself up, sending Cardiff into a heatwave. Had it not been for Jack and Ianto heading down into the darkest depths of the archives for a bit of relief from the stuffiness of the hub, they might never have uncovered it. Once they were within thirty feet of it, they could literally feel the heat emanating off it.

It wasn't long before Tosh had it sussed out, able to switch it back off, and make sure it stayed that way. It had only been at Jack's insistence that they leave it on for just one more day. They were all due a day off, and what better way to spend it than to head down to the beach, knowing that the weather would be perfectly sunny and hot. With a guarantee that the ominous black Welsh clouds that brought torrential rain to the coastline wouldn't be making an appearance, Jack drove them down to what he knew would be a secluded beach, known only to a handful of locals. They brought the device with them, just in case it didn't reach quite as far as Jack's perfect beach. Today's forecast was for sun and lots of it, wherever they went.

Jack helped Ianto to unload the SUV, setting out a picnic rug and all the food and drink they'd brought for the day, along with umbrellas to poke into the sand in case the sun got to be too much for those pale British complexions. Jack rolled out his towel and removed all but his swimming trunks, before lying down and soaking up as much of the sun as possible. Ianto settled in a low deck chair next to him, still dressed in his shorts and t-shirt, a book in his lap, but happily digging his toes into the warm sand.

Gwen was already down to her tiny denim shorts and bikini top. 'I'm going for a swim. Anyone else going to join me?'

'Maybe later,' Jack replied. 'Just don't go out too far.'

'Yes, Mum,' she teased.

'Yeah,' Owen agreed. 'None of us need to see Jack pretending to have a Baywatch moment, running out there to rescue you.'

'That's debatable,' Ianto said, a coy smile playing across his face. He'd consider feigning drowning just for that.

'Not for me, thanks,' Owen said, sliding his sunglasses down.

'I'll come with you, Gwen,' Tosh said. 'Seems a waste not to. How often can you say it's hot enough to go swimming?' She pulled her loose shirt over her head, revealing an extraordinarily skimpy yellow polka dot bikini, which left very little to the imagination.

'Let's go,' Gwen said, as they both took off for the shoreline.

Jack grinned as he watched Owen's mouth hanging open, watching that tiny bathing suit disappear all the way down the beach and into the water. 'Still not interested in that swim, Owen? It's getting pretty damn hot around here.'
