Notes: Jack has been forced to pay the ultimate price. A double drabble.

Jack tugged at the edges of his waistcoat. He couldn't remember the last time he'd worn done, but today it felt right. Today he was finally laying his brother to rest. That deserved his best clothes.

John was already there. He alone was keeping vigil over Gray's body. That felt somehow right too. Jack swallowed down the lump in the back of his throat as he descended the steps. He ran a hand over Gray's shoulder, wishing there was another way this ended.

'It was always about the money with you,' he said to John.  

'Not this time,' he replied.

'I wish it had been.' This was so much worse.

'I did it because I loved you. Always have. Always will. You were always the one person I would have given it all up for. All the jewels and the money and the fame. It didn't mean  anything without you.'

Jack fought back the tears that threatened to spill over. Gray wasn't dead but he might as well be. Others lay dead in his place. Would that John had acted only out of selfish greed. 'And just look at what it cost us,' he replied, his voice barely a whisper.
