Summary: Jack isn't sure offering Ianto a job is such a good idea. A double drabble.
Jack watched the young man from the corner of his eye as they stood and supervised Owen moving their sedated pterodactyl into its new temporary enclosure. Owen didn’t appear nearly as enthusiastic about adopting a new pet as Jack would have liked.
‘You’re sure about this?’ Jack asked. Just because he’d offered the kid a job didn’t mean he had to take it, though he had been rather determined thus far to get Jack's attention.
‘Why wouldn’t I be?’
Jack shrugged. ‘I just figured, after the mess at Canary Wharf, the last thing anyone would want is to get tangled back up in Torchwood business.’
‘With all due respect, sir, that's a rather large assumption to make.’
Jack threw his hands up in defence. ‘Okay. Forget I said it. But you can still say no and back out of this. There is such a thing as life after Torchwood.’
Ianto gave him a knowing look that cut through Jack like a spear of ice. ‘I think we both know that’s a load of bollocks. Sir,’ he added differentially.
Jack bristled slightly at the attitude barely concealed beneath the polite mannerisms. ‘Fine, but just remember I offered you a way out.’
