Pairing Jack/Ianto
Disclaimer Torchwood sadly doesn’t belong to me, but I treat it better.

Jack barged past his lover, nearly blowing out the candle in his wake, Despite his best efforts to keep it steady, the hot wax dribbled down its side and he hissed as some of it dripped onto his thumb, burning it. He shook the candle out in frustration, preferring the semi-darkness to having his hand burned. Melted candle wax was just one of those things that sounded really kinky but in actual fact wasn’t. Not unless you were a sadist, and he preferred pleasure to pain.

‘I’m going outside for a look around,’ he declared out of the blue.

‘But we just got here.’ He didn’t need to see the frown of confusion on Ianto’s, face lit by candlelight, to know that he was perplexed by Jack’s sudden turnaround. ‘We haven’t even taken a look around inside yet.’

‘So take a look and report back,’ Jack said.

Ianto turned on his heel. ‘Excuse me?’ There was so much disdain in just those two words. ‘Is this official Torchwood business now?’

‘Do I have to make an official declaration or something? Isn’t everything we do Torchwood business?’

Ianto seemed put out by the response. ‘I didn’t used to think so. I assumed this was just us putting your mind at rest. I didn’t think you were going to go all Captain on me and start issuing orders.’

Jack clenched his jaw in annoyance. ‘I’m taking the lead because you weren't even meant to be here.’

Ianto snorted and shook his head. ‘That’s so you. Back to bossing everyone around.’

‘For the record there's only you here and, as it just so happens, I am the boss.’

‘Among other things,’ Ianto reminded him. ‘Not least of all, my boyfriend, whom I voluntarily offered to join to help you when I could easily have just told you to bugger off and not even bother turning up for Christmas lunch tomorrow, seeing as how you’re so busy with Torchwood stuff.’

‘Please, just take a quick look around inside and I’ll head outside and do the same. You’re the one who said we should share the problem. So, this is us, halving the workload so that we can get out of here as quickly as possible. Isn't that what you wanted?’ Jack caught the displeased look on Ianto’s face and sighed. ‘Look, I don’t want to fight. I’m just trying to get this done so that we can get out of here.’

It was hard to disagree when Jack put it like that, adopting some of Ianto’s own calm and rational reasoning. He really did want to be able to draw a line under this silly notion that there was anything wrong with the house just so that they could go home and reclaim whatever was left of their evening. Two tiny rift spikes could just be coincidence after all. Stranger things had happened.

Ianto sucked in a breath and let it out slowly. ‘Fine. I’ve still got my phone with a bit of charge. I’ll do a circuit and run a scan for the usual suspects. You… do whatever it is you do when you go outside.’

Jack gave him a salute, hoping it would earn him an eyeroll, or at least some small modicum of forgiveness. ‘See you soon.’

Yes, Jack, try having a bit more tact and asking rather than issuing orders. It'll get you further.
