There was a brief moment of panic as Jack felt his consciousness try to rip itself away from him, like an out of body experience, before he gasped and it pulled itself back towards him, mind and body reuniting in that all too familiar post-death resurrection chaos. There was a second gasp, though this one came not from him, but from the person whom he then heard swear “Jesus,” before they clutched his upper body, reassuring Jack that he was okay.
‘Don't do that,’ Ianto chastised, still clutching him tightly. ‘You scared the living daylights out of me.’
Jack lay there a moment and just enjoyed settling into the folds of coat, scarf and panicked lover. Earth was terrifying, resurrection worse, but having Ianto there made all the difference in the world. Jack’s arm reached backwards to clutch at Ianto’s own, assuring him that they were both here and this was real. He stayed there a moment longer before finally trying to sit himself up, feeling Ianto’s grip on him loosen slightly. ‘What happened?’
‘You tell me.’
Jack took in the scene around him. The pair of them sitting there on the ground by the side of the house, protected at least in some small way from the wind on this side. Jack tried to get his bearings. ‘Weren’t you inside?’
‘Yeah, and the place was giving me the creeps. I don't much care if it was your old house. Figured I’d come find you and convince you we should go, or at least stick together.’
Jack couldn't resist smirking. ‘Got the heebie jeebies without me?’
‘Or simply proved that I shouldn't leave you on your own. Ten minutes and you're already in trouble without me. I came out looking for you and you were just lying there. I hoped you were only unconscious. Do you even know what happened?’
Jack shook his head. ‘Honestly? No.’ He knew the difference between being clubbed over the back of the head by someone who didn’t want him here and just suddenly falling. He supposed if he hit his head hard enough and quick enough on the ground, he might not have known about it.
‘Great. So we don't know if the place is trying to kill you or if you're just a massive klutz.’
‘I was trying to pinpoint any strange rift activity,’ Jack replied, feeling a little embarrassed that he’d died in such an unspectacular and un-dangerous way. ‘I suppose I could have been watching my wrist strap too closely and not watched where I was putting my feet. It’s not exactly a bowling green lawn out here.’
‘Couldn't you just trip and fall over like normal people? You know, without killing yourself?’ Ianto reached behind the back of Jack’s head, gently touching it to check for signs of blood, but if there had been any it had now disappeared, drawing itself back into Jack’s body like a sponge soaking up water. He let out a vexed sigh, pausing to straighten Jack's coat collar whilst he was there. ‘I don't know what to do with you. You know it never gets easier seeing you do that.’
‘I know,’ Jack said, disliking the situation almost as much. ‘But I'm still glad you're here.’
‘Me too.’ He reached out a hand and helped Jack back to his feet, still a little wobbly as he swayed inadvertently into Ianto who was there to clutch him until he could get his feet back underneath himself.
‘I don't think this house likes me.’
‘I can't imagine why,’ Ianto quipped. ‘I find you perfectly charming.’
