They began the walk back to the car, noting that the formerly cloudless night was beginning to turn. The first tiny drops of windswept rain battered at them, like shooing away unwelcome guests. They quickened their pace, letting the slick black vehicle loom up from the twisting gravel drive below them.

The lights all flashed for a brief second as Jack pressed the fob in his pocket, unlocking the doors. He slid into the driver's seat, barely waiting for Ianto the clamber inside and sliding the key into the ignition and turning it. The engine usually roared into life before settling into a contented purr, but instead it grated and growled in a way that couldn’t be good, before coughing and giving out altogether. Jack turned the engine over again, but it refused to start.

‘Don’t tell me you’ve run out of petrol,’ Ianto said. ‘I only filled up two days ago.’

Jack gave the gauge a cursory glance confirming that there was well over half a tank left. Another less important light on the dashboard display was lit though, indicating what the SUV considered to be the problem. ‘Torch in the glovebox?’ he asked.

‘You mean the one we should've taken inside with us?’ Ianto replied, already popping open the compartment and handing it to Jack.

Jack stepped out and did a reconnoitre of the vehicle, Ianto silently falling into step behind him to follow his movements around their car, before Jack got down on his haunches to shine a light underneath the chassis. As soon as he did he could see the problem and knew the dashboard hadn’t been lying. ‘We’ve got a leak.’

‘How could we have a leak? I had the car serviced less than three months ago.’

‘Oil,’ Jack said, reaching underneath and fingering the substance that was pooling beneath the vehicle. ‘Could have torn a line on the way over here, I suppose.’ That last bit of unsealed road was hardly smooth sailing.

‘The way you drive it’s amazing we ever get anywhere in one piece.’

Jack rose to his feet again, flicking the torch back off now that he’d diagnosed the issue. ‘Well, she’s not going anywhere now without oil. Even I know better than to attempt that.’ He might eventually get the engine to tick over, but it would be a matter of minutes before they were simply stranded somewhere else, having added permanent engine damage to their growing list of headaches.

‘Great,’ Ianto huffed, pulling his coat and scarf even more tightly around his neck as the rain began to fall more insistently. ‘It's fine. I'll just call for roadside assistance.’

Jack raised a questioning eyebrow at him. ‘At this time of night on Christmas Eve?’

‘Fine, a taxi then.’ He dialled the number of the local taxi company and Jack watched as he held the phone to his ear for an inordinately lengthy amount of time. He pulled it away and studied the defiant beeping that announced the failure of his call to reach its destination. ‘Oh, that's just…’

‘No reception?’ Jack hazarded a guess. ‘Yeah, I figured as much. Told you it was isolated out here.’

Ianto threw a vexed look at him. ‘I didn't think you meant that isolated!’
