Disclaimer Torchwood sadly doesn’t belong to me, but I treat it better.

Ianto’s torchlight flipped between the device and Jack and then back again. ‘Can you disable it?’

‘I wouldn't even know where to begin,’ Jack admitted. ‘Just because I can recognise one, doesn’t mean I know how to pull it apart.’

They both peered worryingly at the device on the floor as its radiant heat grew even hotter, hitting them like standing far too close to a radiator on its highest setting.

‘What do you suppose happens if it gets too hot?’ Ianto looked up and his eyes met Jack’s. Jack sensed Ianto already knew the answer to the question.

‘I think maybe we should go.’ Jack scrambled to his feet and grabbed him by the elbow and began moving backwards out of the house.

‘How bad?’ Ianto asked, persisting in getting an answer from Jack.

‘If it’s been trying to hold the temporal bubble in place all this time on a hand made and totally unstable power source and a bit of junk yard spare parts? Could implode and collapse the bubble around us. Or…’

Ianto stopped in front of him for a moment, making them collide together in Jack’s haste to keep moving. ‘Or?’

‘The opposite.’

‘Please don't ask me to decide whether imploding or exploding is the better alternative.’

‘That’s why we’re leaving. Right now.’

Jack had already thrown open the squeaking front door, dragging them across the porch and down the rickety old steps, forcing Ianto to keep up with his long, rushed strides.

‘I thought you said we wouldn't be able to leave because of the barrier it created. That we’d be ripped apart. It's already taken you out for the count once.’

‘Wait here for that thing to get so hot that it could tear apart a hole in time and space or chance trying to force our way through its barrier? I know which chance I'd rather take.’

Ianto quickly fell into step with him. ‘Agreed.’

‘If I nearly broke through before just by accidentally getting too close to it, maybe with enough speed I can confuse it enough to break through it altogether.’ He caught the brief panicked look on Ianto’s face. ‘You’re coming with me. Just keep heading towards the SUV,’ Jack commanded. He grabbed Ianto's hand hard and pulled him along. ‘It might try and turn you around. Just keep hold and don't let go. If anyone can break through it, it’s me.’

‘Jack…’ Ianto was about to tell him he should take his chances and leave Ianto behind, but that wasn’t going to happen, gripping his hand even harder and dragging him across the windswept grass. He hadn’t been far from the house the first time it had taken him down, but there was no knowing how far the barrier might stretch or how much damage the device might do but they’d made it as far as the SUV once before. They just had to keep going.

Jack could see the black outline of the car coming into view, still some distance away, when there was a rumble, followed by a shuddering explosion. It knocked them both off their feet, hitting the ground and knocking the breath from their lungs. Jack rolled over to see the house collapsing in on itself in an explosion of flame.

‘We’re not dead,’ Ianto remarked as the ball of fire lit up the night sky, a wave of hot air hitting them in the face before moving beyond them like a ripple in a pond.’

‘But escaped just in the knick of time,’ Jack replied.

‘We might have been asleep in bed when it happened.’

‘Except someone with a sniffle couldn't stay still and had to go poking around, looking for a way to warm the place up. Guess there's perks to being sick after all.’

Ianto gave a concessionary tip of his head. ‘Well, we warmed it up alright.’

Phew, so glad they got out before it blew up! But how much time has passed inside that bubble?
