Summary: Torchwood has a computer problem that only Jack knows how to fix. A double drabble.
Gerald watched with a worried expression as Jack moved around the hub, looking for something from one of the many storage trucks they kept with various equipment. ‘I still don’t understand it,’ he said, trying to get Jack to explain it all again. ‘How does a computer get a virus and how does one then go about curing it?’
Jack looked up from his rifling through a large steamer trunk. ‘It’s not a real virus,’ he explained. ‘Not like something you or I would get. It’s code – instructions, if you will – that make the computer do something it shouldn't, like corrupt important data or overwrite it. Or in this case, attempt to encrypt the data and send it to another computer.’
‘Our archives,’ Gerald replied, still unable to fathom it.
‘Yep, someone is looking for something they think we have, so rather than trawl through our computer systems, they’re just going to send the whole thing somewhere else. All that data in the wrong hands…’
‘I thought you said you stopped it.’
‘Sealed it inside an isolated system,’ Jack replied. ‘But it doesn’t get rid of the virus.’ He brandished a large magnet and held it aloft. ‘But this will.’
