Summary: Jack is ready to spring into action, no matter the hour. A double drabble.
Jack had worked for Torchwood for a very long time. He knew it was the kind of job that could consume your life and he did it willingly, because what other job was he qualified to do and how else could he stay this close to the rift so that he'd be there when his doctor finally came back for him?
Even so, there was an unpredictability about the rift. You never knew when it was going to flare up or what might get spat out as a consequence. He was always ready to spring into action at the drop of a hat. It was one of the many reasons why he chose to stop drinking and always stay hydrated with water instead. Or coffee, these days, if he could get it.
That was another complication. Once upon a time he could have taken a two am call out without a second thought. Now he had a husband and three children to consider. Someone else could take the call but he'd always feel guilty about it.
'Don't go,' Ianto mumbled into the pillow, still half tangled in sleep.
'Duty calls,' Jack replied. 'Promise I'll be home for the school drop-off.'
