Title: Irrational fear
Ianto could feel Jack's eyes boring into his back as he zipped the holdall shut. He'd been following him around their ship for two hours solid, like a puppy wanting to play but knowing his master didn't have the ball. It would almost be a relief to leave just for some space.
'It's going to be fine,' he said, not for the first time. 'I'm going to be fine,' he reiterated. It wasn't as if this was the first time he'd be completing a Shadow Proclamation assignment on his own; it was simply that this one was inherently more risky.
Jack wanted to come with him but it had been made clear to both of them that these folk he would be negotiating between were tetchy enough about things. Sending in two negotiators would only spook them more. He didn't even know his final destination - he'd only get that when he was nearly at the pick-up point - to prevent anyone interfering with things.
Jack stepped in front of him and started fiddling with his wrist strap. 'Here, take this with you,' he said, undoing the buckle and handing his most prized possession to him.
'Jack, that's totally unnecessary.'
'It's got a heavily encrypted beacon,' Jack told him. 'You get in any trouble, you just activate that and I'll be there. It'll make me feel better knowing I can find you. I don't know what I'd do if I lost you.'
Ianto took the vortex manipulator, feeling guilty as he slipped it on, not looking right there on his wrist where it didn't belong. At the same time, he understood how much it must be paining Jack to let him go it alone. 'My lucky charm, then,' he said, trying to console Jack. He vowed to come back no matter what.
