Summary: Sometimes, giving something up is the only way to protect it. A double drabble.
Jack took long strides down the busy city street, resisting the urge to break into a run. He was being followed, that much he knew. If they saw him start running though, they’d know he was onto them, and then he’d never get clear of them. Better to play it cool and make them think he had no idea they were there.
The Committee had haunted his footsteps no matter where he’d gone, and he’d been a lot of places. A busy market precinct in the middle of the Colombian town of San Jose del Guaviare was just the latest in a string of unusual places his investigations had led him.
Problem was, he had found what he was looking for, and the data stick was burning a hole in his pocket. If they caught him with it, who knew what would happen. But how to keep it safe?
The answer struck as he passed a cluttered shop selling postcards and souvenirs. He grabbed a straw hat from a stand and took it inside to pay for it, whilst also arranging a small package to Cardiff. At least in the postal system it might be safe for a little while.
