Summary: Gwen begins to realise the kind of power Ianto wields behind the scenes.

Gwen should have known something was up when Ianto pushed away from the boardroom table and chased after Jack. No one was stupid enough to press Jack when he was in a mood, and today was no exception. If anything, today was even less of a reason to go after him. The revelations that she and Tosh had presented to the group – that the rift not only dumped things, but also took things, including people – had truly set a cat amongst the pigeons. Jack wanted them to stop their investigations immediately. No further discussions. People were stolen by the rift and there was nothing to be done about it.

Everyone knew that Ianto and Jack were a thing, but Gwen had never seen Ianto use that relationship in any way to further a point, or to try and sway Jack from whatever course of action he’d already decided upon. He didn't always agree with Jack – as all of them occasionally did – but he did follow orders just like anyone else. Being Jack’s other half didn’t give him preferential treatment when it came to all things Torchwood.

In the cold light of day, now that Gwen knew the whole truth of things, she saw those little things far more clearly. Flat Holm Island, and the secrets it harboured, were not only something she herself had felt passionately about. Ianto too, it seemed, was prepared to have it out with Jack over what the team had a right to know. He’d been in on the secret long before Gwen and Tosh had uncovered the evidence of it, but he hadn’t been happy about having to keep his Captain's secret.

He’d followed Jack from their briefing in the hope that he might talk some sense into him and make him realise that the secret was out now, or at least some of it. The rest needed to follow. However unpalatable, Gwen, Owen and Tosh had a right to know about where the people returned by the rift ended up, and moreover, how they were once they did return. There were no happy endings, only more pain. Hiding it away and keeping it a secret wasn’t going to make it any better.

Gwen understood now that Ianto was using this – his knowledge – as leverage to convince Jack that there could be no more secrets. It surprised Gwen somewhat that Ianto would even consider using their relationship to influence Jack.

It hadn’t worked of course. They all knew just how ridiculously stubborn Jack could be, and on this more than anything, he had put his foot down. Gwen saw the exchange without hearing the words, but read the body language clearly enough. No matter how close they were, Ianto was to drop it, and to keep his mouth shut if he valued his ongoing employment, and possibly more. Ianto’s forlorn look told her how sorry he was, but what it hadn’t said was that he’d find another way to bring the matter to a head.

I still think both Ianto and Jack were right up to a point. Jack because he couldn't let himself be bullied into telling all, it would have undermined his authority, and Ianto because he knew Gwen wouldn't let it go. Nobody won.

Too many secrets. Ianto, more than anyone, knows how those can turn out tragic.
