Rating: PG
Length: 200 words
Summary: Not every investigation goes Torchwood's way. A double drabble.
Owen looked decidedly unhappy as he stood outside the warehouse, hands on his hips, scowling as the smoke erupted black into the sky. ‘Bloody waste,’ was all he said.
Ianto flexed his right hand, still smarting slightly from the backhanded whack he'd given Dale's henchman. It hadn't been one of their better days. ‘I'm sure there was no other option, he said, knowing it was small consolation.’
‘Maybe if we'd got wind of it sooner, they wouldn't have butchered it so badly that euthanising it was the only humane thing to do.’ He turned to look Ianto in the eye. ‘How the fuck do we missing a bloody space whale coming through the rift? A sodding can of sardines from Norway in 1978 comes through and Jack has us out of bed at four in the morning to go find it, but this…’
Ianto sucked in a deep, thoughtful breath, then regretted it, coughing from the smoke. ‘I don't know.’ Jack would demand answers, forcing them to analyse every last bit of rift activity going back months. It wouldn't help. It was just another waste, trying to fix the past when they all knew you could only protect the future.
