Title: The caretaker
Character: Ianto
Author: m_findlow
Author: m_findlow
Rating: PG
Length: 200 words
Summary: It's a creepy job but someone has to do it. A double drabble.
Everyone on the team considered the underground vaults creepy. There was however a difference between being surrounded by crates of dusty artefacts and being surrounded by a room filled with shelves of bioluminescent creatures being housed in tanks and jars. They were mostly self-sustaining, but someone ultimately had to go down there and check on them once in a while. As the once upon a time newest member of the team, that task had fallen to Ianto, and since then he'd never managed to delegate it to anyone else.
The blueish glow of the place was eerie, making him feel like he was being watched. Maybe he was. Some things had eyes and others long feelers that brushed the edges of the tank, as if confirming they were still there.
Everyone claimed the creatures down here weren't sentient but it could never be proven. Maybe they were highly intelligent and just hadn't found a way of communicating with humans. That or perhaps they considered humans too primitive to be bothered.
Whatever the case, Ianto made sure they were well cared for no matter how much they creeped him out. You just never knew when being nice would finally pay off.
