Summary: Owen is as entertained by the grandchildren as they are entertained by him. A double drabble.
‘I knew you two before you were even a twinkle in your Mummy and Daddy’s eyes,’ the old man said, leaning over to grin at the two four year olds over his thick spectacles. ‘I knew your Nanny and Poppy before they were a twinkle, too.’ He touched them both on their noses.
‘Dad!’ Sian called out. ‘Uncle Owen is being creepy with the grandkids.’
Ianto peered around the lounge room doorway and smiled. ‘Uncle Owen is a hundred and five. Leave him be. Doddery is to be expected when you reach that age.’
Sian looked at her father in askance. ‘You and Dad aren’t.’
‘We do a lot of crosswords,’ he teased. He watched Owen sit there hunchbacked on the sofa, the small children fixated on his glasses, either frightened or fascinated, it was hard to tell. He’d outlived them all and was still going. They had a running joke that his heart had twenty more years in it because he hadn’t used it much for the first twenty. ‘Owen, make sure you tell the kids your famous Christmas story, won’t you?’
Owen’s wrinkly face looked up at them and smiled. ‘I will,’ he promised. ‘It’s a good one.’
