Summary: Even Jack sometimes wonders how he scrapes by. A double drabble.
The bomb blast had knocked Jack and Gwen to the ground, but at least they had survived. The last of the Cell 114 sleepers had tried to take them out with him in his suicide attempt and failed, but it was fine margins.
Jack pushed himself to his feet but then dropped back forward onto one knee, unable to stand. In the slightly concussed haze he found himself staring blankly at the ground immediately in front of him, watching dark red drops of blood hit the ground. It hadn’t quite registered that it was his own blood he was watching.
The sleeper’s huge bladed arm appendage had gone right through his chest and out the other side. It must have missed his heart by millimetres. Even pulling back as he had risked tearing precious arteries.
Gwen was at his side, placing a hand on his shoulder. ‘Jack?’ Then she saw the massive bloody wound in the middle of his chest. ‘Jesus, Jack! How the bloody hell are you still alive?’ She pressed a hand to it, warm red blood leaking between her fingers even as the skin underneath was slowly healing.
Jack leant into her. ‘Sometimes you just get lucky.’
