Summary: Ianto has nothing to fear down in the archives. A triple drabble.
Ianto pushed the crate back onto the shelf with a satisfying sound. Then, another sound caught his ear. One that shouldn’t be there. ‘Jack?’ No response. Reluctantly he turned, face to face with a huge white serpent-dog creature.
‘Gerald! You frightened the life out of me.’ He tentatively reached up to touch the white fur, never having gotten this close before. Gerald usually kept to himself, barely even seen. It calmly watched him from the corner of one huge eye as hand met fur and he gently stroked it, coarser than it looked, but still soft in its own way. Ianto knew Gerald was no pet, but neither did he outright oppose the touch.
‘I don't know how you get around the archives without any of us ever knowing,’ he said. ‘You're quieter than a mouse and I should know. They make more noise than you. I hear them scurrying and squeaking, not that I hear that as often as I used to. I supposed they don't make much of a meal though. How does a creature as big as you stay fed? Are there other things down here that we don't know about?’
Gerald didn't answer, just sort of cocked his head at Ianto as if he understood the question but the answer should have been obvious. ‘Well, I hope they make more noise than you,’ Ianto said, answering his own question. ‘Not sure I like the idea of being down here with things that you consider edible.’
Gerald moved closer and Ianto thought he was about to get headbutted when Gerald puffed out a breath that ruffled his hair. He took it to mean that he was being silly and that with Gerald around he had nothing at all to worry about whilst working down in the archives.
