Summary: Jack's past never seems to stop causing headaches in the future. A double drabble.
Ianto heard the stampede of feet coming down the hall before he heard the voices of their three children, dumping schoolbags and bustling towards the kitchen for snacks. Ianto was still working on chopping up carrot sticks, having been running slightly late to get home in time.
‘How was school today?’ he asked, as they piled onto kitchen stools, reaching across and plucking carrot sticks directly from the chopping board and dunking them in hommus.
‘We saw Dad on telly today.’
Ianto paused his chopping, raising his head. ‘Where?’ He was certain Jack hadn't left the hub all day. Ianto had him getting his unreplied emails up to date on pain of death. He checked that Jack didn't wander from his desk for longer than it took to get a cup of tea, three biscuits or take a loo break.
‘It was a documentary on the battle of the Somme. It was definitely Dad.’
Ianto sighed. ‘And did anyone say anything?’
Tom shook his head and shared a glance with his two sisters. ‘We didn't. I think Mrs Reed fell asleep during it.’
Thank God. It was going to be hard to explain that at their next parent teacher interviews.
