Summary: For Torchwood agents, there's no real closure. A double drabble.
‘I’m not sure who I feel worse for,’ Ianto said, cupping his mug on his lap but feeling too nauseous to drink. ‘Jonas’s mum, seeing her son aged and mutilated like that, or Gwen, because I'm responsible for setting her on that awful course in the first place. They’re both going to remember that nightmare for the rest of their lives.’
Jack put a consoling hand on his shoulder, his earlier anger at Ianto’s well-intentioned actions long gone. It wasn’t just Nikki and Gwen who were reeling from the events of the past few days. ‘Something was always going to give,’ Jack said, settling onto the sofa next to Ianto. ‘That’s the trouble with this job. It eats away at you when you think that there’s more you can do to fix the things that are broken. It’s the price we pay when we get too close to the victims. Their pain becomes our pain.’
Jack sighed and leaned back, head resting on the cold Victorian tiles. ‘Every time I let someone get close to me, they get hurt. How much longer until it’s you and Gwen that gets hurt because of me?’
Ianto leaned close. ‘We can handle it.’
