Summary: There are mixed feelings about the death of Ed Morgan. A double drabble.
Jack heaved a sigh as Owen pulled out the tray, revealing one recently deceased Edwin Morgan. No autopsy required. They all knew exactly how he’d died, committing suicide by self inflicted stab wounds to the torso.
Jack sighed loudly a second time. ‘We could have prevented this. Ed Morgan should still be alive.’ Still cooped up in his house, all alone, just getting on with a life lived in complete isolation from the rest of the world.
Owen snorted in derision. ‘He was a miserable old git who murdered innocent young women. Or have you forgotten that? He got what he deserved in the end.’
Jack shook his head. ‘It’s not our place to play judge, jury and executioner, no matter what we know or how we come to know it.’
‘Rubbish,’ Owen spat. ‘We do that every day. Why should this bastard be the exception?’
Jack reached down and gently wiped a string of drying saliva from the corner of Edwin’s slack mouth. ‘Because I think he lived with the guilt of it far longer than he ever lived with having enjoyed doing it. His life was nothing but years of misery.’
‘Tell that to the girls he murdered.’
