Summary: It's not always easy coming up with a cover story. A double drabble.
‘I suppose we could disguise it as a sinkhole,’ Tosh offered, moving to the left to avoid being run over by a police car as it swanned past, making a nuisance of itself. Most of its compatriots were doing likewise, setting up cordones which though helpful to keep the general public at bay, weren’t doing much to stop the blues and twos from getting too close.
‘That’s great until people start seeing the poor sods that got melted into the bitumen when the ground lost cohesion,’ Owen remarked, trying to put up a tent around one of them so that they could start to try and prise what was left out of the road base.
She shrugged. ‘Have you got a better suggestion?’
‘Didn’t say I did,’ he replied. ‘Just not sure who’s going to care one way or another. If the coppers hadn’t mucked around in the first place, we wouldn't be dealing with casualties.’
That was true enough, even if it didn’t help them. Once the police tape was removed and everyone gone from the scene there was still going to be a massive hole in the road, and no telling if it get bigger or open elsewhere.
