drabble_zoneSummary: Jack assumed date night meant hitting the town somewhere upmarket. A triple drabble.
Jack knocked on the apartment front door, surprised to have Ianto answer it wearing only baggy jeans and a loose fitting top. He frowned, checking his watch. ‘You said pick you up at seven, didn't you?’ He'd made sure to arrive in time for their date night, picking out his nicest slacks, satin-backed vest and his silver pocket watch.
‘Pick me up? Are we going somewhere I don't know about?’ Ianto asked.
Jack paused and then the smell of something wafting from the apartment hit his nose. It smelled amazing, whatever it was. His brain slowly pieced together the smells and Ianto's less than smart casual attire. ‘Did you cook?’
‘Of course. It's not done yet, but I've got wine and some warm bread for starters. That's why I said pop by at seven for seven thirty dinner.’
‘Oh’. Jack fumbled with the new information. He wasn't accustomed to having anyone cook for him. ‘I just assumed since we were finally having a night out that we would go somewhere… fancy.’
‘I thought a two course dinner, dessert and wine was fancy,’ Ianto replied. ‘But we can go out if you want. Just let me turn the oven off and change.’
‘No, no, no.’ Jack nearly fell over his own words, trying to assure Ianto that he wasn't ungrateful. ‘A home cooked meal is perfect. Just not what I expected. Figured you'd want a night off from even more work.’
He shrugged off the comment. ‘It's not work. I quite like cooking, but, you know, with this job…’
Jack nodded in understanding, looking down at his feet. ‘Well, now I feel thoroughly overdressed for the occasion.’
‘I don't see how. My apartment doesn't have a dress code so whatever you're wearing is fine. Now, are you coming inside or not?’
