drabble_zoneSummary: Ianto finds himself confronting what exists on the other side of living. A triple drabble.
Ianto had died once before. He could never be certain of it, but the doctors at the hospital had thought him dead, along with the military personnel that had removed all the bodies from Thames House, so he supposed that simply had to be true. He hadn’t remembered any of it, apart from feeling sad that Jack would have to go on living without him, and that he’d become forgotten, just like all Jack’s other lovers.
There was no memory of what came after living. No great revelation, no reunion, no blank empty space of nothingness. He had simply woken up – as if he’d been in a dreamless sleep – disoriented and amazed that he was alive at all.
This time it was different. He’d been immortal for close to a year and had avoided death in much the same way as it seemed to constantly find Jack. Death, it turned out, wasn’t nothing. Not anymore. There was a sensation of being somewhere else, and though he could see nothing, nor hear a single sound, he knew something else was there, watching him from the emptiness.
Owen had once described the same thing. That feeling that he hadn’t been alone when he’d been dead. There had been a presence that had to be death itself, coming to claim its newest servant. Yet, just as it had known with Owen, it couldn’t touch him. He didn’t know how he knew that, but there was some barrier, preventing it getting too close. Still, it unnerved him. He wondered if maybe he wasn’t as immortal as had been promised. How did one fight off death?
He didn’t have time to find out. He blinked, and when his eyes opened, there was Jack hovering over him, looking frantic, but relieved. He’d cheated death once more.
