torchwood100Summary: Aliens often question the unquestioned. A double drabble.
Ianto took great pride in making sure alien guests were well looked after during their stay on Earth. Whilst his co-workers might not appreciate the sparkling glassware and proper napkins – not those flimsy paper things – it was important that they put their best foot forward for other species. Who knew when an alliance with them might be of benefit, and no one wanted to offer a helping hand to a host who showed up with takeaway on paper plates. At least that was what Ianto thought.
That was why he was starting to feel nervous and uncomfortable as their latest guest picked up the pristine china plate and held it up, inspecting it. ‘Is something wrong?’ Ianto said, politely trying to broach what might be an awkward situation.
‘They're round.’
‘Yes?’
‘Why?’
The question confused Ianto. He'd never been asked before. He paused, thinking before responding. ‘Well, since ancient times plates were fashioned from wet clay on a spinning wheel to turn them before drying them hard.’
The alien turned it with its long appendages. ‘It's not very efficient though, is it? A square shape would be better for dividing sustenance into its respective quadrants.’
‘I suppose it probably would.’
