drabble_zoneSummary: Weevils don't seem to fear the water, even though they clearly should. A triple drabble.
Jack and Ianto stood at the edge of the quay, starting down into the dark black water as it lapped at the timber stanchions underneath their feet.
‘Well, someone is going to have to go in there and get it,’ Jack finally said, voicing the words that Ianto prayed he wouldn’t dare utter.
Ianto continued staring at the undulating bay waters. ‘Why do they do that if they know they can't swim?’ he asked.
Jack shrugged. ‘Why do weevils do anything? Survival at all costs.’
‘Think it misunderstood the concept of survival,’ Ianto replied, having watched the creature dive into the bay half an hour ago to avoid being captured by them, it had gone under and simply never come back up. It was doubtful it had swum the entire way and resurfaced elsewhere, given the string of bubbles that had broken the surface for nearly two whole minutes as they’d watched and waited. Neither of them was going to jump in there after it, but if it flailed an arm out of the water, they might have been inclined to grab for it and haul it back out.
‘Can’t be more than ten degrees in there,’ Ianto observed. ‘Maybe hyperthermia got it first.’ It seemed kinder than drowning.
‘Either way, can’t have it washing up on a beach somewhere in a few days' time.’
Of course it would, Ianto thought. People went missing all the time, assumed drowned in the Taff or in the bay, and their bodies were never seen again, but you could guarantee that any alien corpse would definitely be found, and by someone who would make it very public indeed. ‘Must be your turn,’ Ianto said, hoping Jack would agree.
‘We’ll do it together.’
‘You just want an excuse for us to wear our wetsuits.’
