Summary: Jack is finding it hard to laugh about anything. A double drabble.
Jack watched silently from his doorway as Gwen and Ianto laughed about something over cups of coffee and takeaway danishes. They didn't notice him there, leaning in close and sharing something that amused them. Maybe they were laughing about him, not that he saw much in himself that was funny anymore.
It felt strange watching anyone finding anything amusing, let alone his two teammates. There'd been so much pain and tears lately that Jack wondered if they'd ever be able to heal from all the hurt. His team was only half of what it had been, and the deaths of Owen and Tosh hung heavily in every corner of the hub. Jack could sense their presence looming over him, blaming him, adding to the enormous weight of guilt that he carried around with him always.
Jack felt like he might never smile again. Not that he hadn't been smiling for the sake of his friends, but he hadn't been able to smile and mean it. It wasn't just half his heart that was broken, but all of it, knowing that there'd come a time when what he had left would be gone as well.
Laugh while you can, he prayed.
